Based on the Mosquito Daoist’s description, the Corpse Mound World was fraught with danger. However, for Gu Han’s sake, Gu Hai could not stop.
“The Corpse Mound World? That’s this black-foggy region?” the Unborn Man said.
“That’s right. This Corpse Mound World is larger than it seems. You will understand when you enter the black-foggy region. It forms an independent world, a world that Heaven previously established. Furthermore, what I mentioned earlier was not the most dangerous part of it. The greatest danger is the countless resentful spirits,” the Mosquito Daoist said with a bitter smile.
“Resentful spirits?” everyone said with misgivings.
“Yes. Those are the resentful spirits that died in the war between animal spirits and shamans. Hah! Your Reverence, don’t underestimate those resentful spirits. The resentful spirits in the Corpse Mound World cannot reincarnate, so they continue to exist with overwhelming resentment and hatred. Furthermore, their deities merged into the resentful spirits; we cannot underestimate their strength. Of course, these resentful spirits no longer have much intelligence. They attack upon seeing anyone. They should be the strongest resentful spirits in the world,” the Mosquito Daoist said while frowning.
“The resentful spirits are that powerful?” the Unborn Man exclaimed in shock.
“Yes. I can still deal with the ordinary resentful spirits. However, at a certain level, they will appear in groups. Even I can only hide. Furthermore, there is a corpse pit in the center of the Corpse Mound World. That place has the most corpses and the most resentful spirits. Furthermore, they are all the strongest resentful spirits. Neither the Fly Daoist nor I can approach it; only the Corpse Worm Heavenly Demon can,” the Mosquito Daoist explained.
“What kind of key is this Primal Essence Pearl?” Chang Ming asked with a frown.
“The Primal Essence Pearl is the key to this Corpse Mound World because resentful spirits cannot approach one if one holds the Primal Essence Pearl. That’s why the Fly Daoist and I fought with all our might after knowing about it,” the Mosquito Daoist explained.
“Why fight with all your might?” Gu Hai asked.
“To…to subdue the resentful spirits,” the Mosquito Daoist said with a forced smile.
“The resentful spirits have animal spirit deities fused into them. You want to consume their deities?” Kong Xuan asked with a frown.
The Mosquito Daoist remained silent for a while before nodding. “Kong Xuan, don’t underestimate these animal spirit deities. In ancient times, there were countless animal spirit deities stronger than you during the war between the shamans and animal spirits. Back then, the humans were at the bottom of the pecking order. If not for the war, the humans would never have risen. Even the current animal spirit kings would not be able to stand against those from ancient times.”
Kong Xuan nodded.
“Since the Primal Essence Pearl can prevent the resentful spirits from approaching us, we should enter immediately and quickly rescue Gu Han,” Gu Hai said.
The Mosquito Daoist opened his mouth a few times but eventually nodded with a faint, wry smile.
Gu Hai will not give up because of the danger, and the others are ignorant, even raring to try. The Mosquito Daoist felt he had wasted all his effort in explaining earlier.
The group of six entered the black-foggy region.
Once they entered, they felt the surrounding space flash.
“We have entered the Corpse Mound World. Everyone, be careful,” the Mosquito Daoist said seriously.
Everyone nodded. Then they followed the Mosquito Daoist in.
The world within was extremely dark. The group could only vaguely make out some towering mountains and precipitous ridges in this incredibly vast region.
Gu Hai held the Mantra Seeking Ball to direct them, and Chang Ming held the Primal Essence Pearl in case of any surprises. Everyone was cautious. After all, the Mosquito Daoist had repeatedly emphasized the danger in this place, telling them to take it seriously.
After flying for a while, they saw a vast plain covered in withered bones of both humans and animal spirits.
“These are the experts who barged in. Many experts have entered over the past tens of thousands of years, but they all fell here,” the Mosquito Daoist explained.
Kong Xuan flew to the bones of an immortal crane, and his face sank.
“Based on the state of these bones, this immortal crane might have been in the Upper Heavenly Palace Realm,” Kong Xuan said sullenly.
“Those who dare to barge into the Corpse Mound World are all peak experts. The experts of the past have already turned into withered bones. Those that entered recently are still rotting corpses,” the Mosquito Daoist said with a bitter smile.
Everyone’s heart sank.
There were tens of thousands of corpses and bones around. Furthermore, these were just what they could see; plenty more lay beyond the range of visibility.
As they flew, they suddenly felt startled, as though something was targeting them.
“There!” Kong Xuan’s face sank as he looked at a distant summit.
A crimson wolf stood on that summit. It appeared translucent, radiating a crimson aura as it stared ferociously at the group.
“A resentful spirit?” the Unborn Man asked.
“A wolf resentful spirit? We had better leave quickly,” the Mosquito Daoist said as his face sank.
“Mosquito Daoist, are you exaggerating? That resentful spirit is pretty strong, but judging by its aura, it is just in the Middle Heavenly Palace Realm, at best. Is this what you are talking about? I can consume it in one mouthful,” Kong Xuan said disdainfully.
That crimson wolf suddenly reared its head and howled.
Awoo!
“Leave quickly! That wolf is very problematic!” the Mosquito Daoist yelled.
“Let’s go!” Gu Hai said.
This was the Mosquito Daoist’s homeland, after all. Gu Hai chose to trust him.
Everyone nodded, but Kong Xuan felt unconvinced. He opened his mouth and sucked.
Boom!
Kong Xuan immediately pulled the crimson wolf over, wanting to swallow it.
“It is only so-so!” Kong Xuan sneered.
Boom!
The crimson wolf instantly shot bright red light into the surroundings, like translucent red chains pulling on it, preventing Kong Xuan from consuming it.
“Huh?” Kong Xuan’s face sank.
Awoo! Awoo! Awoo!
Just then, countless wolf howls came from the surroundings. In the blink of an eye, tens of thousands of crimson wolves appeared on various mountaintops, all glaring ferociously at Gu Hai’s group.
Each of the crimson wolves shot a chain of red light at the crimson wolf Kong Xuan wanted to consume. It seemed they wanted to pull it back, so that Kong Xuan would not swallow it.
“Humph!” Kong Xuan snorted coldly and sucked harder.
Whoosh!
Even with tens of thousands of crimson wolves pulling, Kong Xuan still swallowed that crimson wolf in one gulp.
Awoo! Awoo! Awoo! Awoo!
The many wolves howled furiously.
Suddenly, a red light appeared where the crimson wolf that was just swallowed had been. Then that crimson wolf reappeared amid the red light.
“Roar!” The crimson wolf bared its fangs and howled at Kong Xuan.
“That’s impossible! I already destroyed it in my stomach. Why did it reappear?” Kong Xuan’s face sank.
“The wolf deity is fused into all the wolf resentful spirits. The wolf deity has records of all the wolf resentful spirits, so you cannot kill them. The more you kill, the more resentful they become. They come back to life using the Resentful Energy. The only way is to kill all the crimson wolves. Otherwise, they cannot die. Furthermore, they will pursue you relentlessly. They are not powerful but are extremely hard to deal with.” The Mosquito Daoist smiled bitterly.
“Then I’ll kill them all!” Kong Xuan’s expression turned cold.
“Roar!”
Kong Xuan opened his mouth and sucked. A black wind appeared in the surroundings, pulled over the tens of thousands of wolf spirits, and sucked them into his stomach in the blink of an eye.
“I’ll eat however many there are!” Kong Xuan said coldly.
Whoosh!
A boundless red light flashed in the surroundings. The crimson wolves that Kong Xuan had just swallowed also came back to life.
They all bared their fangs and charged at Kong Xuan while howling.
“They returned?” Kong Xuan’s face sank.
“I told you, as long as one wolf resentful spirit remains, they can always return in the Corpse Mound World. They are not powerful but are endlessly troublesome,” the Mosquito Daoist said.
Chang Ming took out the Primal Essence Pearl, and the wolves could not approach.
Kong Xuan appeared sullen. He discovered how troublesome these resentful spirits were for the first time.
“Let us try.” Gu Hai extended his hand and drew his Life Executioner Saber.
“Your Reverence, it’s useless.” The Mosquito Daoist still felt worried.
Boom!
Gu Hai swung his saber, instantly sending out millions of saber qi at the crimson wolves.
All the crimson wolves exploded instantly. Then, they entered the Karmic Energy pool in the Eye of Death.
Buzz!
The crimson wolves transformed into surging Mending Heaven Energy in the blink of an eye.
Sizzle! Sizzle! Sizzle! Sizzle! Sizzle!
Sizzling rang out around Gu Hai as a crimson mist appeared. However, the wolf spirits did not return.
“Huh? How can this be?” the Mosquito Daoist said in confusion.
Awoo!
A pained wolf howl suddenly came from the distant horizon. That wolf howl resounded with overwhelming resentment.
The resentful spirits Gu Hai had killed would no longer return.
The Mosquito Daoist and Kong Xuan looked at Gu Hai with curiosity and surprise.
“Let’s leave quickly. We can’t stay here for long, or we will draw over more wolf resentful spirits,” Gu Hai said.
“That’s right. The larger the commotion, the stronger the resentful spirits drawn over. We might even alert the Corpse Worm Heavenly Demon,” the Mosquito Daoist said anxiously.
The group quickly weaved through a forest, heading into the depths of the Corpse Mound World.
Awoo! Awoo! Awoo!
Not long after the group left, more crimson wolves charged over. However, the group was already gone.
Awoo! The wolves felt furious, and they went to search for Gu Hai’s group.
At a rotting corpse in the forest, after the wolf resentful spirits left:
Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!
A swarm of flies suddenly flew up. These flies’ compound eyes strangely reflected the image of Gu Hai’s group.
Whoosh!
The flies flew quickly, heading into the depths of the Corpse Mound World.
Soon, the flies arrived at a vast valley.
There were nearly a thousand corpses—of both humans and animal spirits—in the valley.
Countless flies flitted among the rotting corpses. White maggots climbed out of the bodies, looking extremely disgusting.
These corpses seemed to be food for the maggots and flies.
An azure-clad man sat cross-legged at the side. Many maggots and flies crawled all over him. However, his eyes gave off an azure light as he looked in satisfaction at the flies and maggots consuming the corpses.
“Eat up! Eat up! After you finish this batch, I’ll go to another town and bring back some humans and animal spirits for you to eat!” the azure-clad man said with a cold smile.
If Chang Ming were here, he would recognize this person at a glance. This was the “master” who gave him the Primal Essence Pearl, the Fly Daoist.
The earlier swarm of flies flew in and immediately approached the Fly Daoist. Then they suddenly disappeared into his head.
The Fly Daoist suddenly narrowed his eyes. “Oh? The Mosquito Daoist returned? That little fellow too? That means the Primal Essence Pearl returned?”
